There are several layouts. In vertical week views, each day forms a column with hourly lines for activities; in horizontal week views, days span a page with rows for time blocks or tasks. Physical weekkalenders are often bound planners or desk calendars with weekly pages, while undated formats allow starting at any time.

Typical contents include day headings, date, week number, and space for appointments, to-dos, and notes. Some versions feature time blocks (for example, 8:00–17:00), habit tracking, or references to holidays and events. Many weekkalenders are designed to be used alongside monthly or yearly calendars.

History and evolution: The concept evolved from daily diaries and monthly calendars, gaining popularity with printed planners in the 20th century. The advent of digital calendars introduced weekly views in software and apps, enabling reminders, sharing, and synchronization across devices.

Usage and conventions: Weekkalenders are common in personal planning, education, and business. In many regions, weeks start on Monday (ISO standard), while others start on Sunday. The term is most often used in Dutch and some European contexts.
