Wear testing, also known as wear-out testing or durability testing, is a quality assurance process used to assess how a product stands up to use over time. The goal is to predict real-world performance, identify failure modes, and estimate service life under expected operating conditions. Tests simulate repetitive use, environmental exposure, and incidental mishandling to reveal how materials and assemblies wear, degrade, or fail.

Common approaches include accelerated life testing, abrasion and scratch testing, flex and fatigue testing, impact testing, and environmental conditioning. Laboratories may subject samples to controlled stressors such as cycles of bending, rubbing, loading, heat, cold, humidity, UV radiation, chemicals, or immersion. Standardized test methods published by organizations such as ASTM, ISO, and IEC provide repeatable procedures and acceptance criteria (for example abrasion resistance tests, flex fatigue tests, and environmental aging tests).

Applications span textiles and footwear, consumer electronics and wearables, automotive components, industrial machinery, and medical devices. Findings are expressed as wear rates, remaining strength, surface damage, or time to failure, and they guide material selection, design improvements, quality control, and maintenance planning. Limitations include the gap between laboratory conditions and real-world use, the potential for accelerated tests to misrepresent certain wear mechanisms, and variability in user behavior. Despite these caveats, wear testing remains a core tool for evaluating durability and informing reliability engineering throughout product development.
