Waxable is an adjective used to describe a material or surface that can be coated with wax. A waxable surface will accept adhesion and a uniform layer of wax, allowing the wax to form a protective or decorative finish when cured or buffed. The term is common in industries such as automotive detailing, woodworking, and textiles, where wax enhances appearance, reduces moisture transfer, or provides wear resistance.

In automotive care, paints and clear coats are described as waxable when they can receive car wax or sealants. For wood, unfinished or properly prepared finishes are waxable, enabling the use of beeswax or carnauba wax to create sheen and added protection. In textiles, waxable fabrics such as waxed canvas are intentionally treated with wax to become water-repellent and more durable.

The level of waxability can be influenced by surface properties. Porous or rough surfaces may absorb wax unevenly, while glossy, sealed, or specially coated surfaces may repel wax or require surface preparation. Temperature and cleanliness also affect application, with most waxes needing a clean, dry surface and moderate warmth for optimal bonding.

Types of wax used vary by context and include natural waxes (carnauba, beeswax), petroleum-based paraffin wax, and synthetic waxes. Application methods range from hand rubbing or machine polishing to hot waxing for fabrics and leather goods. Re-waxing is typically recommended periodically to maintain protective properties and luster.

Some surfaces are not waxable, such as those with resistant coatings, non-porous laminates, or finishes that chemically deter wax adhesion.
