Watershed management is an integrated approach to managing land and water resources within a drainage basin to achieve sustainable outcomes in water quantity and quality, ecosystem health, and human well-being. A watershed is the land area that drains to a common outlet such as a river or lake. The objective is to balance water supply with ecological integrity while reducing flood and drought risks.

Key elements include data-driven assessment of hydrology, water quality, land use, and ecosystems; inclusive planning that involves communities, landowners, agencies, and utilities; and the design of practical interventions. Common strategies include soil and water conservation (terracing, contour farming, check dams), protection and restoration of riparian buffers and wetlands, reforestation, improved agricultural practices (nutrient management, reduced pesticide use), urban stormwater controls, and pollution control and erosion reduction.

Governance uses integrated watershed management frameworks to coordinate across sectors and scales, set objectives, allocate resources, and monitor progress. Plans are typically adaptive, relying on regular data reviews and updated models. Tools include GIS, hydrological modelling, water quality testing, remote sensing, and vulnerability assessments to prioritize actions.

Outcomes can include more reliable water supplies, better water quality, reduced sedimentation, healthier habitats, and greater resilience to climate variability. Challenges include governance fragmentation, data gaps, funding constraints, and competing user interests. Successful programs emphasize transparent decision-making, clear rights and responsibilities, and sustained stakeholder engagement.
