Vörösvértestképzés, also known as erythropoiesis, is the process by which red blood cells are produced in the body. This crucial physiological function primarily occurs in the bone marrow of adults. The process begins with hematopoietic stem cells, which are multipotent cells capable of differentiating into various blood cell types, including red blood cells.

These stem cells undergo a series of developmental stages. Initially, they mature into erythroblasts, which are precursor cells that gradually accumulate hemoglobin, the protein responsible for oxygen transport. As the erythroblast matures, it loses its nucleus and other organelles, eventually becoming a reticulocyte. Reticulocytes are immature red blood cells that are released from the bone marrow into the bloodstream. Within one to two days, the reticulocyte matures into a fully functional erythrocyte, or red blood cell.

The rate of vörösvértestképzés is tightly regulated by hormones, most notably erythropoietin (EPO). EPO is produced mainly by the kidneys in response to low oxygen levels in the blood. When oxygenation decreases, EPO levels rise, stimulating the bone marrow to increase red blood cell production. Conversely, when oxygen levels are sufficient, EPO production is suppressed, and the rate of erythropoiesis slows down. This feedback mechanism ensures that the body maintains an adequate supply of oxygen-carrying red blood cells. Nutritional factors such as iron, vitamin B12, and folate are also essential for healthy vörösvértestképzés.
