Võimetus is a term in Estonian that describes the absence or reduction of ability to perform tasks or act in a given context. It can refer to physical, cognitive, emotional, or situational limitations and can be temporary or permanent. In everyday language, võimetus may apply to ordinary activities such as moving, communicating, or caring for oneself, as well as to more complex tasks like consenting to an agreement or managing finances.

The concept is related to, but not identical with, puue, which is more commonly used to denote a disability or impairment as a lasting condition. Võimetus emphasizes the lack of ability in a particular moment or situation, whereas puue often denotes a broader, longer-term state.

Causes of võimetus include illness, injury, aging, mental health conditions, medication effects, or developmental factors. It is important to distinguish temporary võimetus, which can be addressed through treatment, rehabilitation, or accommodations, from permanent incapacity.

In legal contexts, võimetus refers to lack of capacity to perform legal acts or to give informed consent. If a person is deemed incapable, guardianship or supported decision-making arrangements may be established to protect their rights and interests.

Addressing võimetus often involves environmental adjustments, assistive devices, and support services aimed at preserving independence and participation in society.
