Vízretartó is a Hungarian term that translates to "water-retaining" or "water-holding" in English. It refers to a material or substance that has the ability to absorb and hold water. This property is crucial in various applications, particularly in agriculture and horticulture, where it contributes to soil health and plant growth.

In soil science, a water-retaining soil has a greater capacity to store moisture, making it more resilient to drought conditions. This is often due to the presence of organic matter, clay particles, or specific soil amendments that can bind water molecules. Such soils can release this stored water gradually to plant roots, reducing the need for frequent irrigation and preventing water stress in plants.

Certain agricultural products are also designed to be vízretartó. These can include superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) which are synthetic materials capable of absorbing hundreds of times their weight in water. When mixed with soil, SAPs swell into a gel-like substance, creating a reservoir of moisture around plant roots.
