vízlogging

Vízlogging is the systematic collection of water-related measurements over time using sensors and data loggers. Widely used in hydrology, environmental monitoring, and water utilities, it supports assessment of water quantity and quality, infrastructure performance, and resource management. The term fuses the Hungarian víz (water) with the English word logging.

Typical equipment includes submerged or buoy-mounted sensors, in-pipe probes, and multiparameter sondes connected to data loggers or telemetry systems. Measured variables commonly include water level, flow or discharge, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, conductivity, and salinity. Data can be stored locally or transmitted via cellular, Wi-Fi, LoRaWAN, or satellite links.

Data are processed as time series and subjected to quality assurance and quality control, calibration, and metadata documentation. Standards in data formats and exchange (e.g., time stamps, units, sensor calibration) facilitate interoperability and long-term trend analysis.

Applications include flood forecasting, drought monitoring, irrigation optimization, drinking-water management, habitat assessment, and urban water-system surveillance.

Challenges include sensor fouling, power limitations, remote access, data gaps, and maintaining data quality across heterogeneous devices. The field is moving toward edge computing and standardized data models to improve integration and decision-making.
