Vérrögképződés, commonly referred to as thrombosis, is a critical biological process that plays a dual role in the body. On one hand, it is a vital defense mechanism, preventing excessive blood loss when a blood vessel is injured. This is known as hemostasis. On the other hand, it can be detrimental when it occurs inappropriately, leading to serious medical conditions.

The process involves a complex cascade of events. When a blood vessel is damaged, platelets, small cell fragments in the blood, adhere to the site of injury and aggregate to form a temporary plug. Simultaneously, a series of clotting factors, proteins present in the plasma, are activated in a sequential manner. This cascade culminates in the conversion of fibrinogen, a soluble protein, into fibrin, an insoluble network of fibers. This fibrin mesh traps blood cells, further solidifying the plug and sealing the damaged vessel.

However, if this process is not properly regulated, a blood clot can form within a blood vessel without any apparent injury. This pathological thrombosis can obstruct blood flow, leading to tissue damage or organ failure. For instance, a clot in a coronary artery can cause a heart attack, while a clot in a cerebral artery can result in a stroke. Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) occurs when a clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs, and can lead to pulmonary embolism if the clot dislodges and travels to the lungs. Various factors can increase the risk of thrombosis, including genetic predisposition, immobility, surgery, certain medical conditions like cancer, and hormonal therapies. Anticoagulant medications are often prescribed to prevent or treat thrombosis by interfering with the clotting cascade.
