Hormonal mechanisms also play a significant role. The renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) is a key hormonal pathway. When blood pressure or blood flow to the kidneys decreases, the kidneys release renin, an enzyme that initiates a cascade leading to the production of angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor and stimulates the release of aldosterone, which promotes sodium and water reabsorption by the kidneys, thereby increasing blood volume and pressure. Antidiuretic hormone (ADH), also known as vasopressin, contributes by increasing water reabsorption and constricting blood vessels, particularly during significant drops in blood volume.

The body also employs local mechanisms to regulate blood flow and pressure within specific tissues. These include autoregulation, where blood vessels adjust their diameter in response to metabolic needs of the surrounding tissue, and responses to chemical factors like oxygen and carbon dioxide levels.
