Växtlinjer, a Swedish term roughly translating to "plant lines" or "growth lines," refers to observable patterns or structures in plants that indicate their growth history, environmental conditions, or physiological state. These lines are not always macroscopically visible and can sometimes require microscopic examination.

One common manifestation of växtlinjer is seen in the annual rings of trees, known as dendrochronology. These rings represent periods of growth within a year, with a distinct lighter band (earlywood) formed during rapid spring growth and a darker band (latewood) formed during slower summer and autumn growth. The width and characteristics of these rings can reveal information about past climates, such as rainfall and temperature.

Beyond trees, växtlinjer can appear in other plant tissues. For instance, in some herbaceous plants, layers of cells within stems or roots may show differential growth rates, creating visible bands. These can be influenced by factors like seasonal changes in light, water availability, or nutrient uptake.
