This phenomenon is primarily associated with manual transmissions, although automatic transmissions can also exhibit varying degrees of it. In manual transmissions, växlingsmjukheten is influenced by several factors. The driver's skill in operating the clutch and accelerator pedal is paramount; a smooth engagement and disengagement of the clutch, synchronized with appropriate throttle application, results in a seamless gear change. Conversely, abrupt clutch operation or poor timing can lead to a noticeable jolt or lurch.

The transmission's design and condition also play a significant role. Internal components such as synchromesh rings, which help match the speeds of the gears being engaged, contribute to smoother shifts. Worn synchromesh rings or other internal parts can lead to a rougher feeling. The quality and viscosity of the transmission fluid are also important, as they lubricate the moving parts and aid in the synchromesh function.

In automatic transmissions, växlingsmjukheten is controlled by the transmission's control unit, which manages hydraulic pressure and clutch engagement. While modern automatics are highly sophisticated and generally offer very smooth shifts, older designs or those with certain performance characteristics might exhibit more pronounced shifts.
