Växelvalet refers to the process of choosing or switching between different gears in a vehicle. This is primarily applicable to manual transmission vehicles where the driver manually selects the appropriate gear for optimal engine performance and speed. Automatic transmission vehicles automate this process, although some offer manual override options or different driving modes that affect gear selection.

The purpose of växelvalet is to match the engine's rotational speed (RPM) with the vehicle's speed and the demands placed upon it. Lower gears provide more torque for acceleration and climbing hills, while higher gears allow for greater speed with lower engine RPM, improving fuel efficiency and reducing noise during cruising.

In a manual transmission, the driver operates a gear shifter and a clutch pedal. Depressing the clutch disengages the engine from the transmission, allowing the driver to move the shifter to the desired gear. Releasing the clutch re-engages the engine. Correct växelvalet involves anticipating the need for a different gear based on factors like acceleration, deceleration, terrain, and load.

Improper växelvalet can lead to several issues, including excessive wear on the transmission and clutch, poor fuel economy, and a less comfortable driving experience. For example, staying in too high a gear at low speeds can cause the engine to lug, while shifting into too low a gear at high speeds can over-rev the engine. Modern vehicles often feature driver assistance systems that can provide guidance or even automate aspects of gear selection to optimize performance and efficiency.
