Väripikselit, often translated as color pixels, are the fundamental building blocks of digital images. Each color pixel is a tiny element that, when combined with millions of others, forms a complete picture on a screen or in a digital file. The color of a pixel is determined by a combination of primary colors, most commonly red, green, and blue (RGB). By varying the intensity of these primary colors, a vast spectrum of colors can be represented.

The intensity of each primary color within a pixel is typically represented by a numerical value. In the RGB color model, each primary color component can range from 0 (no intensity) to 255 (full intensity). For example, a pixel with RGB values (255, 0, 0) would appear as pure red, while (0, 255, 0) would be pure green, and (0, 0, 255) would be pure blue. Combining these values creates other colors, such as (255, 255, 0) for yellow, or (128, 128, 128) for gray.

The number of bits used to represent the color of a pixel determines its color depth. A higher color depth allows for a greater number of possible colors. For instance, 24-bit color, commonly known as true color, uses 8 bits for each of the three primary colors, resulting in over 16 million possible colors. This fine-grained control over individual pixel colors is what enables the display of detailed and realistic images.
