Värikuvista, or color imaging, refers to the technology and processes used to capture, reproduce, and display images that represent color. Unlike monochromatic images, which only depict variations of a single color, typically black and white, värikuvista aims to recreate the full spectrum of colors visible to the human eye.

The fundamental principle behind värikuvista involves separating light into its constituent primary colors, usually red, green, and blue (RGB) or cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (CMYK). By combining these primary colors in varying proportions, a wide range of secondary and tertiary colors can be generated. This separation can be achieved through various optical and electronic means. In photography, color film or digital sensors employ filters or multiple layers sensitive to different wavelengths of light.

The reproduction of värikuvista can be done through additive or subtractive color mixing. Additive color mixing, commonly used in displays like televisions and computer monitors, combines light sources of red, green, and blue. When these lights overlap at different intensities, they create other colors, with all three at full intensity producing white. Subtractive color mixing, used in printing, utilizes pigments or dyes that absorb certain wavelengths of light. Cyan, magenta, and yellow inks, when applied in varying concentrations, absorb specific colors from white light, reflecting the remaining colors, which our eyes perceive as the printed color.
