Color management refers to a set of procedures and technologies used to ensure that colors are reproduced consistently across different devices and media. This process aims to achieve a predictable and accurate representation of color from its source, such as a digital camera or scanner, through editing software, to its final output on a display, printer, or other device. The goal is to prevent undesirable color shifts and maintain the intended appearance of an image or design.

The core of color management lies in the concept of color spaces. A color space is a specific range of colors that a device can capture or display. Different devices have different color gamuts, meaning they can reproduce different sets of colors. For instance, a wide-gamut monitor can display a broader range of colors than a standard sRGB monitor. Color management systems use profiles, often in the International Color Consortium (ICC) format, to describe the color characteristics of individual devices.

These profiles allow software to translate colors from one color space to another. When an image is created or edited, it is typically done within a working color space, such as Adobe RGB or sRGB. When this image is to be displayed on a monitor or printed, the color management system uses the monitor's or printer's profile to convert the colors so they appear as close as possible to the original intent. This process involves techniques like gamut mapping, which addresses the challenge of colors that exist in the source space but not in the destination space. Effective color management is crucial for professional photography, graphic design, printing, and any field where accurate color reproduction is important.
