väliskate

Väliskate is the Finnish architectural term for exterior cladding, the outer layer of a building that protects and finishes its external envelope. It is installed over the structural frame and typically above a moisture barrier and thermal insulation. The väliskate is intended to shed water, resist wind and temperature changes, reduce heat loss, and contribute to the building’s appearance. It works with the building’s vapor control layer and drainage plane to manage moisture, and in many designs is part of a ventilated rain-screen system that allows air to circulate behind the cladding.

Common materials used for väliskate include brick, timber siding, metal panels, fiber cement, stucco, concrete panels, and composite claddings. The choice depends on climate, fire safety requirements, cost, maintenance, and desired aesthetics. There are two broad types of exterior cladding systems: solid cladding, which covers the wall in continuous sheets or panels, and ventilated or rainscreen cladding, which leaves a gap between the cladding and the wall to permit drainage and airflow.

Design and installation must consider structural loads, thermal expansion, moisture management, flashing and sealing around openings, joints, and penetrations, as well as fire performance and durability. Regular maintenance is required to inspect for damage, clean surfaces, and reseal joints or repaint as needed.
