These mechanisms ensure that all processors have a consistent view of data, preventing situations where one processor modifies data in its cache, making it stale for other processors. Protocols like MESI (Modified, Exclusive, Shared, Invalid) are widely used to track the state of cache lines and maintain coherence.

The effectiveness of a cache's performance is measured by its hit rate, which is the ratio of cache hits to total memory accesses.
