Vállfájdalom refers to pain experienced in the shoulder joint or surrounding tissues. This is a common ailment with a wide range of potential causes, affecting people of all ages and activity levels. The shoulder is a complex ball-and-socket joint, allowing for a broad range of motion, but this complexity also makes it susceptible to injury and overuse.

Common causes of vállfájdalom include rotator cuff tears or tendinitis, which involve inflammation or damage to the group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder. Impingement syndrome, where tendons or the bursa become compressed during arm movement, is another frequent culprit. Arthritis, both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, can also lead to significant shoulder pain and stiffness.

Other contributing factors can include frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis), a condition characterized by stiffness and pain that gradually worsens; dislocations or subluxations, where the upper arm bone becomes partially or fully dislodged from the shoulder socket; and fractures of the clavicle, scapula, or humerus. Overuse injuries from repetitive motions, poor posture, and even certain sleeping positions can also trigger or exacerbate shoulder pain.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, assessment of range of motion, and often imaging techniques such as X-rays, MRI, or ultrasound to identify the underlying cause. Treatment approaches vary depending on the diagnosis and severity, and may include rest, physical therapy, medication (pain relievers, anti-inflammatories), injections, or in some cases, surgery. Early intervention and appropriate management are key to effectively addressing vállfájdalom and restoring shoulder function.
