The term combines vuoto, meaning leak or outflow, and reitti, meaning route. In practice, vuotoreitit denote routes where liquids can bypass barriers and travel under pressure, often along fractures, joints, permeable layers, or along engineered interfaces.

In hydrology, environmental engineering, and related fields, vuotoreitit are important for understanding how water, oil, contaminants, or other liquids migrate through soils, rock masses, or built environments. They can form naturally in karst systems, fractured rock, or stratified sediments, and can also arise from structural faults, construction joints, or degraded seals in dams, storage tanks, landfills, and piping networks.
