Vokalregister is a concept in vocal pedagogy that refers to distinct ranges within the human voice, each with its own characteristic timbre, resonance, and laryngeal configuration. Registers are often linked to changes in how the vocal folds are used, the amount of vocal fold mass vibrating, and where resonance is concentrated in the vocal tract. They are commonly described in Western classical and popular singing as different zones of pitch range.

The most widely recognized registers are the chest (or modal) register, the head (often called head voice or falsetto in some traditions), and the mixed or middle register, which lies between the chest and head ranges. The chest register typically produces fuller, heavier tones with sensations of vibration in the chest and lower throat; the head register produces lighter, brighter tones with resonance felt higher in the skull; the mixed register combines elements of both to enable higher pitches with a balanced timbre. Some singers also use a falsetto, a high, airy voice quality that often corresponds to a separate vocal fold configuration, and the so-called whistle or very high, specialized tones found in some voices.

In practice, many teachers emphasize a smooth transition between registers through the passaggio, aiming for a seamless blend rather than a sharp break. Modern perspectives note that registers are somewhat subjective and can be viewed as a nomenclature for different vocal configurations rather than strictly fixed anatomical compartments. Training focuses on breath support, vocal cord coordination, and resonance placement to extend range and improve tonal control while avoiding strain.
