The production of vinyl chloride typically involves two main processes: the direct chlorination of ethylene or the oxychlorination of ethylene followed by the cracking of ethylene dichloride. Vinyl chloride is flammable and can form explosive mixtures with air. It is synthesized industrially on a massive scale due to the widespread use of PVC in various sectors, including construction (pipes, window frames, flooring), automotive, healthcare (medical devices), and packaging.

Vinyl chloride is classified as a human carcinogen by several international health organizations. Exposure, particularly chronic occupational exposure, has been linked to an increased risk of angiosarcoma, a rare form of liver cancer. Due to its hazardous nature, strict regulations govern its production, handling, and use to minimize worker and environmental exposure. It is typically handled in closed systems to prevent its release into the atmosphere.
