Vilustuminen, commonly known as the common cold, is a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. It primarily affects the nose and throat. Numerous viruses can cause the common cold, with rhinoviruses being the most frequent culprits. Transmission occurs through airborne droplets expelled when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks, and by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching one's eyes, nose, or mouth.

Symptoms typically appear one to three days after exposure to the virus and can include a runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, sneezing, mild body aches, and sometimes a low-grade fever. Most people recover from a cold within a week or two. There is no cure for the common cold; treatment focuses on managing symptoms. This includes rest, staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, and using over-the-counter medications for symptom relief such as decongestants, pain relievers, and cough drops. Antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections like the common cold. Prevention strategies involve frequent hand washing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and not touching one's face. While generally mild, colds can sometimes lead to secondary infections like sinus infections or ear infections.
