villimansikka

Villimansikka, or wild strawberry, is the common name for Fragaria vesca, a small perennial flowering plant in the rose family (Rosaceae). It is native to temperate regions of Europe, western Asia, and parts of North America and is widely foraged in woodlands, meadows, and hedgerows. The name villimansikka is used in Finnish to distinguish it from cultivated garden strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa).

It forms a low, creeping clump with long runners. It bears trifoliate, serrated leaves and small white flowers with a yellow center. The fruit is small, conical, and red when ripe, with a strong aroma. Each berry carries numerous small seeds (achenes) on the surface.

It favors sheltered, partially shaded sites such as forest edges and clearings, often in mildly acidic to neutral soils. It flowers in late spring to early summer, and its fruits ripen gradually through early summer. It is important for pollinators and serves as a food source for various animals; humans also harvest it for fresh consumption and preserves.

Wild strawberry is valued for its concentrated flavor and aroma, which are typically stronger than those of cultivated varieties. It is eaten fresh, used in jams, desserts, and beverages. In some regions, leaves are used to make herbal tea.
