viabiliteits

Viabiliteits is a Dutch-language concept and the stem used in many compound nouns to denote feasibility or viability. It appears in terms such as viabiliteitsanalyse, viabiliteitsstudie, and viabiliteitsrapport, which translate to feasibility analysis, feasibility study, and feasibility report. The concept focuses on whether a plan can be implemented successfully and sustained over time.

A viabiliteitsonderzoek assesses technical, economic, legal, and environmental aspects to determine if a project is viable. It examines whether the project is technically doable, financially attractive, compliant with regulations, and acceptable to stakeholders.

Typical components include market demand, technology and operations requirements, estimated capital and operating costs, potential revenues or benefits, financing options, and risk assessment. Financial indicators such as return on investment, net present value, and internal rate of return are often used to gauge economic viability. Environmental and social impacts are increasingly part of the analysis, as are timing and regulatory hurdles.

The process is usually conducted early in project development and informs a go/no-go decision, as well as conditions that must be met for proceeding. Outputs commonly include a recommended course of action, required assumptions, a cost estimate, and a plan for further work.

In Dutch practice, viabiliteit is related to but not identical with haalbaarheid (feasibility). While haalbaarheid concerns whether a plan can be implemented under given constraints, viabiliteit emphasizes long-term viability, sustainability, and profitability.
