Vesinimet, or hydronyms, are the names given to bodies of water such as rivers, lakes, seas, oceans, bays, and wetlands. In Finnish and many other languages, vesinimet refer to the names themselves and the study of their origin and distribution, a field known as hydronymy, a subfield of toponymy.

Hydronyms are typologically diverse and categorized by water body type, including river names, lake names, sea and ocean names, and smaller features like bays and channels. They often reflect descriptive landscape features, the names of peoples who lived near the water, mythological associations, or historical events. In multilingual or multilingualized regions, a single water body can have several hydronyms across different languages, and names may change over time due to political or cultural shifts. The study of vesinimet relies on sources such as gazetteers, historical maps, archival records, and field surveys. Naming standards are often managed by national toponymic authorities and international bodies like the United Nations Group of Experts on Geographical Names (UNGEGN), which promotes consistency and documentation of water names.
