Industrially, water repellency is achieved through various treatments and coatings. For textiles, this might involve applying hydrophobic finishes like fluorocarbons or silicones. In construction, water-repellent sealants and coatings are used to protect surfaces from moisture damage and reduce maintenance needs.

The degree of water repellency can be quantified using various methods, such as the contact angle measurement. A higher contact angle, typically above 90 degrees, indicates a greater degree of water repellency. Conversely, a low contact angle suggests that the material is hydrophilic, meaning it is readily wetted by water.
