Verðtrygging, often translated as indexation, is a mechanism used in economics to adjust monetary values for inflation. It links contractual payments, such as loan installments or wages, to a specific price index, most commonly a consumer price index. The primary goal of verðtrygging is to maintain the real value of these payments over time.

In practice, when the inflation rate rises, the nominal value of the payment also increases by the same percentage. Conversely, if there is deflation, the nominal value would decrease. This ensures that the purchasing power of the amount remains relatively stable regardless of changes in the general price level.

Verðtrygging is prevalent in Iceland, where it has been a significant feature of the financial system for decades. It is applied to various financial instruments, including mortgages, savings accounts, and some types of debt. Proponents argue that it provides stability and predictability in financial planning, protecting individuals and businesses from unexpected inflation eroding the value of their assets or liabilities.

However, verðtrygging also faces criticism. Some argue that it can exacerbate inflation by creating a feedback loop where rising prices lead to increased payments, which in turn can fuel further price increases. Others suggest it can complicate financial planning for those with variable incomes or make borrowing more expensive, as lenders may incorporate the expected inflation into interest rates.
