vernissing

Vernissing is the process of applying varnish to a surface, most commonly in painting and wood finishing. The verb vernissen means to varnish, and vernissing is the act or result of that process. Varnishing protects the surface from abrasion, dust, and moisture, and can modify the appearance by altering gloss and color saturation.

In painting, varnish is usually applied only after the work is completely dry, to create a uniform surface and to unify the underlying tones. Varnish types include oil-based, acrylic (water-based), polyurethane, and shellac, available in gloss, satin, and matte finishes. Application methods include brushing, wiping, or spraying, typically in thin coats with drying intervals between coats.

In wood finishing, vernissen seals the timber, adding a decorative sheen and improving durability against moisture and wear. Finishing products range from simple polyurethane varnishes to traditional oil-based blends and water-based formulations.

In conservation and restoration, varnish removal may be performed to examine the original paint or wood grain, followed by careful revarnishing to protect the surface while preserving authenticity.

Vernissing is distinct from vernissage, the term used in Dutch for the opening event of an art exhibition, whereas vernissage refers to a protective coating process for surfaces.
