Work typically involves assessing waste streams, space, climate, and audience to select an appropriate system, from simple household bins to larger commercial setups. Duties include choosing bedding materials (shredded paper, cardboard, coconut coir), establishing proper moisture and aeration, and selecting suitable feedstocks. A vermikompostist monitors temperature, moisture, pH, and bin conditions, manages decomposition rates, controls odors, and prevents pests. They guide the collection of vermicompost and, in many cases, the production of worm tea by extracting leachate or steeping finished material.

Common outputs are vermicompost and liquid extracts used as fertilizers. Applications span home gardens, schools, urban farms, and municipal programs, contributing to waste diversion, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and improved soil health.
