Verisuonitukoksien, or venous thrombi in English, refers to blood clots that form within the venous system of the body. These clots typically develop in the deep veins, a condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), but they can also occur in other veins. Venous thrombi are composed of blood components, primarily red blood cells and fibrin, and can vary in size and location.

The formation of venous thrombi is often associated with factors that promote blood stasis, endothelial injury, or a hypercoagulable state, a condition known as Virchow's triad. Prolonged immobility, surgery, pregnancy, certain medications, and genetic disorders can all contribute to the development of these clots. Symptoms of venous thrombi may include pain, swelling, warmth, and redness in the affected area, although some clots may be asymptomatic.

One of the most serious complications of venous thrombi is pulmonary embolism (PE), which occurs when a clot breaks free and travels to the lungs, potentially blocking blood flow. This can lead to severe complications, including death. Other complications may include post-thrombotic syndrome, a condition characterized by chronic pain, swelling, and skin changes in the affected limb.

Diagnosis of venous thrombi typically involves a combination of physical examination, medical history, and imaging studies such as ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) scans, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Treatment usually involves anticoagulant medications to prevent the clot from growing and to reduce the risk of new clots forming. In some cases, thrombolytic therapy or surgical intervention may be necessary to remove the clot.

Prevention of venous thrombi includes measures to improve blood flow, such as regular exercise, avoiding prolonged immobility, and using compression stockings. In high-risk individuals, anticoagulant medications may be prescribed to prevent clot formation.
