Verisuonitekniikka, commonly known as vascular surgery, is a surgical specialty concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the arterial, venous, lymphatic, and peripheral blood vessels. The field focuses on both open and endovascular techniques, using tools such as angiography, duplex ultrasound, MR angiography, and CT angiography for imaging and preoperative planning.

Early developments in the discipline emerged in the late nineteenth century, when surgical techniques for arterial aneurysm repair and limb revascularization were first described. In the 1960s and 1970s, the introduction of synthetic grafts and early endovascular stents expanded the therapeutic options. The advent of balloon angioplasty and percutaneous transluminal angioplasty in the 1970s, followed by drug-eluting stents and covered stents, led to the rapid growth of minimally invasive procedures. This transition has reduced morbidity and shortened hospital stays for many vascular interventions.

Training for a vascular surgeon typically requires a foundation in general surgery followed by a residency or fellowship that concentrates on the management of atherosclerotic disease, trauma, venous disorders, and peripheral arterial disease. Increasingly, board‑certified vascular surgeons are also asked to manage endovascular aneurysm repair and renal transplant vascular bypass, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the specialty.

Key challenges in verisuonitekniikka include maintaining adequate vessel patency, managing restenosis, handling infection risk around grafts, and addressing the growing population of elderly patients with complex comorbidities. Research continues to focus on novel biomaterials, stent designs, hybrid surgical‑endovascular approaches, and improved perioperative care protocols to enhance patient outcomes.
