Verbrequires, also known as verbrequiers or verbrequiers de France, are a traditional type of wooden clog or shoe originating from the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France, particularly in the mountainous areas of the Massif Central. These footwear items were historically crafted from a single piece of wood, often oak or chestnut, and were designed to be durable, water-resistant, and suitable for rugged terrain. Their construction involved carving the wood into a rough shape, then shaping and smoothing it to fit the wearer’s foot before securing it with leather straps or laces.

Verbrequires were widely used by peasants, shepherds, and laborers in rural France during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Their simplicity and low cost made them a practical choice for those who worked in harsh environments, such as farming or herding.
