Verantwoordingsrechten, or accountability rights, are the rights of stakeholders to obtain information, explanations, and justification about the actions, decisions, and performance of an organization or public authority. They serve as a governance mechanism to promote transparency, legitimacy, and responsibility, and they enable actors such as citizens, shareholders, employees, customers, and donors to scrutinize behavior and outcomes.

Scope and applications vary by context. In corporate governance, verantwoordingrechten allow shareholders and other stakeholders to request insight into strategy, risk management, remuneration, and financial results, and to demand explanations for significant decisions. In public administration, they enable citizens and Parliament to hold authorities to account by requiring disclosure of policies, procedures, and the rationale behind decisions. Legal frameworks often support these rights, including freedom of information or open-government laws for public bodies and general administrative law that requires reasons for decisions. In the Netherlands, accountability mechanisms are reinforced by information rights and governance norms, while privacy and data-protection considerations (such as the need to protect confidential or personal data) can limit access in certain cases.

Purpose and limits: verantwoordingrechten aim to improve trust and reduce mismanagement by facilitating oversight, yet access may be restricted to protect privacy, trade secrets, or security interests. They complement other accountability tools such as audits, oversight bodies, and internal controls.
