Venytystestit, or tensile tests in Finnish, are mechanical tests in which a material sample is pulled in tension until failure. They are used to determine properties such as tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, Young’s modulus, and toughness. The tests are common for metals, polymers, composites, and ceramics and can use different specimen geometries depending on the material and standard.

In a typical procedure, a specimen with standardized dimensions is gripped in a universal testing machine and loaded axially at a controlled rate. Force and displacement are measured, often with an extensometer to capture precise strain. The test produces a stress–strain curve from which properties are extracted: yield strength (often via an offset method), ultimate tensile strength, elongation at break, and the modulus of elasticity. Fracture surfaces and failure modes are also observed for analysis.

Standards provide the required specimen shapes, inspection methods, and testing speeds. Examples include ISO 6892 for metallic materials and ISO 527 for plastics, with related ASTM methods such as D638 for plastics and E8 for metals. Environmental conditions (temperature, humidity) and equipment calibration are specified in many standards to ensure comparability of results across laboratories.

Applications of venytystestit include material selection, quality control, product certification, and research and development. They help engineers quantify material behavior under load, compare different materials, and support design calculations. Limitations involve sensitivity to specimen quality, anisotropy, strain-rate effects, and environmental factors, which can influence the results and their interpretation.
