The creation of a vector mask typically involves drawing vector shapes, such as paths, Bezier curves, or shapes defined by anchor points and handles, using tools provided by graphic design software. These paths define the edges of the mask. The area within the path is considered visible, while the area outside is considered transparent, or vice versa, depending on the mask's configuration. This allows for precise control over which parts of a layer or image are revealed or hidden.

Vector masks are particularly useful for tasks requiring sharp, clean edges, such as isolating objects from their backgrounds, creating cutouts, or compositing images. Their scalability makes them ideal for designs that will be used at various sizes, from small web icons to large-format prints.
