The term vektoriuloja (Finnish for "vectors") is used in epidemiology and plant pathology to refer to organisms that transmit pathogens between hosts. The concept emphasizes the role of an organism in disease spread rather than its taxonomic classification, so vektoriuloja can include a variety of creatures such as insects, arachnids, nematodes, nematodes, or other arthropods that carry pathogens from one host to another.

Vektoriuloja can transmit pathogens through biological or mechanical means. In biological transmission, the pathogen replicates or develops within the vector before being passed on, as seen with malaria parasites in mosquitoes. In mechanical transmission, the pathogen is carried on the vector’s body parts or surfaces without any biological development within the vector itself.

Ecology and control are central to understanding vektoriuloja. Their abundance and activity depend on climate, habitat, host availability, and seasonal patterns. Public health and agriculture aim to interrupt transmission cycles by reducing vector populations, protecting hosts, or limiting contact between vectors and hosts. Strategies include environmental management, targeted chemical controls, and the use of biological control agents.

Taxonomically, vektoriuloja are not a formal group but a functional category used to discuss disease ecology. The term appears in Finnish-language texts and is often used alongside other terms such as välittäjiä or leveittäjiä for vectors.
