Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) is a technology that enables bidirectional energy flow between an electric vehicle (EV) and a home electrical system. It allows the vehicle’s battery to power household loads or act as a backup during power outages, helping to manage energy use and increase resilience.

Operation generally requires three elements: a bidirectional charger/inverter installed at the home, a compatible EV, and control software or energy management systems. When needed, energy is drawn from the vehicle’s battery to supply the home; during normal operation, the system can charge the battery. In many setups, an automatic transfer mechanism connects the home to the vehicle during outages or when grid power is expensive or unstable.

Components and standards vary by market. A compatible EV with built-in V2H or V2G capability, a bidirectional charger, and appropriate interconnection equipment are required. Standards and compatibility depend on regional regulations and vehicle charging standards; some CHAdeMO-based systems support V2G/V2H, while others use CCS or ISO 15118-based solutions. Compliance with local electrical codes and utility interconnection rules is essential.

Use cases and benefits include emergency power during outages, peak load shifting, and enhanced integration with rooftop solar or other renewables. V2H can offer resilience for critical devices and potential cost savings through time-of-use rates or optimized charging and discharging.
