Vedenpehmennys, often translated as water softening, is a process that reduces the concentration of mineral cations in hard water. Hard water is characterized by high levels of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) ions. While not typically a health hazard, hard water can cause various aesthetic and practical problems.

The most common method for water softening is ion exchange. This process uses a water softener unit, which contains resin beads coated with sodium ions (Na⁺) or potassium ions (K⁺). As hard water passes through the resin tank, the calcium and magnesium ions in the water are attracted to the resin beads and bind to them, displacing the sodium or potassium ions, which are then released into the water. This effectively replaces the "hard" minerals with "soft" ones.

Over time, the resin beads become saturated with calcium and magnesium ions and lose their softening capacity. To restore the resin's effectiveness, the water softener undergoes a regeneration cycle. During regeneration, a brine solution, typically made from salt (sodium chloride) or potassium chloride, is flushed through the resin tank. This concentrated salt solution reverses the ion exchange process, stripping the calcium and magnesium ions from the resin beads and replacing them with sodium or potassium ions again. The removed minerals and excess brine are then flushed out of the system.

The benefits of water softening include preventing scale buildup in pipes, water heaters, and appliances, which can improve energy efficiency and extend the lifespan of these items. Soft water also leads to better lathering of soaps and detergents, reducing the amount needed and making cleaning more effective. It can also improve the feel of skin and hair by preventing mineral residue.
