Vattenseparation is the process of separating water from another phase in a mixture, with the goal of producing a liquid product with desired water content. It is widely used in chemical processing, petroleum production, and food and beverage industries to remove or concentrate water as required by the process or product specifications.

Techniques used to separate water range from gravity-based methods to more advanced separation technologies. Gravity separation relies on density differences and is common in produced-water treatment and crude-oil processing, using separators and clarifiers to form distinct water and oil or liquid phases. Coalescence and demulsification involve chemical additives or treatment to break stable water-in-oil emulsions and allow droplets to merge. Centrifugation increases centrifugal forces to enhance separation for challenging mixtures. Filtration and membrane technologies, including microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and nanofiltration, physically separate water using selective barriers. Thermal methods such as distillation or drying remove water by phase change or dehydration of solvents. In oil and gas, three-phase separators and electrostatic or chemical treatment are often employed to meet downstream requirements.

Applications include dehydration of crude oil and natural gas streams, wastewater and process-water treatment, and drying of beverages, solvents, and other liquids. Challenges include handling stable emulsions, high salinity, energy and chemical use, and management of waste streams. Performance is typically measured by water content, water cut, phase clarity, and the absence of undesirable emulsions.
