The term is often used in the context of the expansion of the Kingdom of Hungary during the 13th and 14th centuries, particularly under the rule of King Béla IV (r. 1235–1270) and his successors.

During this period, Hungary underwent a dramatic expansion of its borders, absorbing vast territories in the Carpathian Basin and beyond. Béla IV, following the devastation of the Mongol invasion of 1241–1242, sought to strengthen Hungary’s defenses by incorporating neighboring lands, including parts of modern-day Romania, Slovakia, Croatia, and Serbia. This expansion was driven by both strategic military considerations and the desire to consolidate power in a fragmented region.

Economically, the era saw increased trade, particularly along the Danube River, which connected Hungary to Central and Eastern Europe.
