A varustejoukko typically includes a primary weapon or tool, secondary weapon if applicable, ammunition or magazines, protective gear such as a ballistic vest and helmet, appropriate clothing, navigation and communication devices, lighting, shelter or sleeping gear for longer missions, food and water, medical supplies, and maintenance tools. Contents are tailored to role, mission duration, threat level, and terrain, and are organized into pouches and containers to enable rapid access and balanced weight.

Design and management: The selection emphasizes ergonomics, weight distribution, and regulatory or unit standards. Equipment and pouches are often compatible with common carrier systems to allow quick reconfiguration.
