In accounting, vareføring refers to how goods are recognized as assets in the balance sheet and how their cost is allocated to cost of goods sold when sold. Inventory is typically valued at acquisition cost or, under certain standards, at the lower of cost and net realizable value. Common methods for measuring vareføring include FIFO (first-in, first-out), weighted average, or standard cost. Regular stocktaking is used to reconcile physical stock with accounting records and to identify obsolescence or shrinkage.

In logistics and operations, vareføring involves stock control, warehousing, and traceability. Modern vareføring relies on inventory management systems, barcoding or RFID tagging, and integrated ERP solutions to track units, batch numbers, expiration dates, and locations. Efficient vareføring aims to minimize holding costs, reduce stockouts, and improve order fulfillment times.

In a legal and commercial context, vareføring encompasses the moment when ownership and risk pass from seller to buyer, often defined by contract terms or Incoterms. It also relates to regulatory compliance, product safety, and documentation such as invoices, delivery notes, and customs paperwork.
