Vaperdeposition is a general term describing the deposition of material as a solid film from the vapor phase onto a substrate to form coatings or thin films. It is used as an umbrella concept for processes that deliver material via a vapor and promote its growth on a surface, through either chemical reaction or physical condensation.

The term encompasses a range of techniques, including chemical vapor deposition (CVD), physical vapor deposition (PVD), atomic layer deposition (ALD), molecular beam epitaxy, and pulsed laser deposition. These methods operate across different pressures, from high vacuum to atmospheric, and under various temperatures, enabling the production of diverse material systems such as metals, oxides, nitrides, carbides, and polymers.

In chemical vapor deposition, reactive precursor gases participate in surface reactions to form the film, often with byproducts removed from the chamber. In physical vapor deposition, material is vaporized from a target and then condenses or deposits on the substrate. ALD uses sequential, self-limiting surface reactions to achieve precise thickness and conformality. Process parameters commonly include substrate temperature, chamber pressure, precursor delivery, and the energy input used to generate the vapor phase.

Applications of vaperdeposition span electronics, optics, protective coatings, and surface engineering. Common materials include semiconductor films, oxide and nitride coatings, metallic layers, and composite or multilayer structures. Advantages include high film purity, strong adhesion, and uniform coverage on complex geometries; challenges include equipment cost, precursor safety, potential gas-phase reactions, and stress in thick films.

Characterization techniques such as ellipsometry, X-ray spectroscopy, AFM, TEM, and profilometry are used to assess thickness, composition, roughness, and microstructure, ensuring film quality aligns with functional requirements.
