Vapaajäähdytys, often translated as free cooling, is a process that uses ambient air to cool a space or equipment. Instead of relying on mechanical refrigeration, which consumes significant energy, vapaajäähdytys leverages cooler outdoor temperatures to directly or indirectly reduce the temperature of a building or a data center. This method is particularly effective in regions with a significant number of hours per year where the outside air is cooler than the required internal temperature.

There are two primary types of vapaajäähdytys: direct and indirect. In direct vapaajäähdytys, outdoor air is filtered and supplied directly into the building's ventilation system, displacing warmer indoor air. This is a straightforward approach but requires careful management of humidity and air quality. Indirect vapaajäähdytys, on the other hand, uses a heat exchanger. Outdoor air passes over one side of the heat exchanger, cooling a separate fluid on the other side. This cooled fluid is then circulated to cool the indoor air or equipment, preventing direct contact with the outdoor air and thus maintaining better control over indoor conditions.

The primary benefit of vapaajäähdytys is significant energy savings and a reduced carbon footprint. By minimizing the use of energy-intensive chillers, operational costs can be substantially lowered.
