Vannmist is a term used in Norwegian and Swedish to denote a fine dispersion of water droplets suspended in air. The concept is closely related to the English term water mist and generally refers to aerosols produced by atomization or ultrasonic vibration. Vannmist droplets are typically much smaller than those in ordinary spray, which allows rapid evaporation and cooling with minimal surface wetting.

Water mist is produced by high-pressure pumps and specialized nozzles or by ultrasonic transducers. Droplet sizes are commonly described by the Sauter mean diameter, often in the range of roughly 1 to 100 micrometers, with ultra-fine mist below 10 µm. The small droplets evaporate quickly, which enables heat absorption through vaporization while reducing runoff and wetting hazards compared with larger sprays.

Common applications include evaporative cooling in outdoor or semi-enclosed spaces, humidity control in greenhouses, and display or stage effects where a light mist enhances visuals. In fire safety, water-mist systems release fine droplets that absorb heat and displace oxygen, offering fire suppression with relatively light water impact on structures compared with traditional sprinkler systems.

Maintenance and considerations for vannmist systems include clean water and properly designed nozzles to prevent clogging from mineral buildup or biofilm. Water quality, system maintenance, and appropriate ventilation are important to prevent excessive humidity, mold growth, or slippery surfaces in occupied spaces. The term is primarily used in Scandinavian contexts, where it is synonymous with water mist; English-language texts more often use “water mist” or “mist cooling” terminology.
