Vampyromorphids, also known as vampire squids, are a small species of cephalopod found in the deep ocean. They are the sole extant member of the order Vampyromorphida and the family Vampyroteuthidae. Despite their name, vampire squids are not true squids and are more closely related to octopuses and cuttlefish. They are known for their distinctive appearance and unique adaptations to their deep-sea habitat.

Vampire squids are relatively small, typically growing to a size of about 6 inches (15 centimeters) in length. They have a rounded, umbrella-like body with long, thin arms that can extend up to 2.5 times the length of their body. Their most striking feature is their cloak-like webbing that connects their arms, which they can use to create a parachute-like structure to slow their descent in the water. This webbing is also covered in light-producing organs called photophores, which the vampire squid uses for camouflage and communication.

Vampire squids are found in the deep ocean, typically at depths of 2,000 to 4,000 feet (600 to 1,200 meters). They are thought to be the only cephalopod species that inhabits the oxygen minimum layer, a region of the ocean where oxygen levels are very low. To survive in this harsh environment, vampire squids have evolved a number of unique adaptations, including a slow metabolism and the ability to extract oxygen from the water more efficiently than other cephalopods.

Vampire squids are carnivorous and feed primarily on marine snow, a mixture of dead or dying plankton, fecal matter, and other organic debris that falls from the upper layers of the ocean. They use their arms to capture food particles and then bring them to their beak-like mouth to consume. Despite their fearsome name, vampire squids are not aggressive and are not known to attack humans.

Vampire squids have a unique reproductive strategy. Females lay a small number of large eggs, which they carry with them until they hatch. The hatchlings are relatively large and well-developed, allowing them to fend for themselves immediately after hatching. Vampire squids are thought to have a relatively long lifespan, with some individuals living for up to 10 years in captivity.
