Valmetod is a term used in political science, particularly in Swedish-language literature, to describe the set of rules and procedures by which votes are translated into seats or decisive outcomes in elections. It encompasses how ballots are collected, votes counted, and winners determined, and it shapes how citizen preferences are converted into political representation. The concept is central to understanding electoral systems and reforms.

Valmetoder can be broadly categorized into majority systems, proportional representation, and mixed or preferential methods. In majority or plurality systems, the candidate with the most votes wins (first-past-the-post). In two-round systems, a second round may be required to reach a majority. Proportional representation allocates seats to parties roughly in proportion to votes, using quota or divisor methods such as the Hare quota, D’Hondt, or Sainte-Laguë. Mixed systems combine elements of both approaches, often using single-member districts with a proportional tier to balance local representation and overall proportionality.

Preferential or ranked methods involve voters ordering candidates or options, with ballots redistributed according to a counting rule, as in the single transferable vote or ranked-choice voting. Some systems impose thresholds, for example a minimum share of votes to gain representation, to prevent fragmentation.
