vallikraavides
Vallikraavides is the Estonian inessive plural form meaning “in the moats.” It derives from vallikraav, a moat or defensive ditch surrounding a fortification. A vallikraav itself is formed by a ditch dug around ramparts and can be either dry (unwatered) or wet (filled with water).
In fortification architecture, vallikraavid served as a barrier to slow or hinder attackers, complementing other defenses
Historically, vallikraavid were common in medieval and early modern fortifications across the Baltic region, including Estonia
Usage notes: the form vallikraavides appears in Estonian texts to describe locations within moats and is encountered
