Valguslaenguid, commonly known as bow legs or genu varum, is a condition where the legs bow outward at the knees, creating an abnormal angle between the thighbone (femur) and shinbone (tibia). This deformity can occur in both children and adults, though it is more frequently observed in infants and young children as they develop.

In infants, valguslaenguid is often a normal part of growth, particularly between the ages of 1 and 3, as the knees naturally spread apart to accommodate the widening pelvis. By the age of 2, most children’s legs will gradually straighten on their own. However, in some cases, the condition may persist or develop later in childhood, potentially indicating an underlying issue such as rickets, a vitamin D deficiency, or skeletal abnormalities.

In adults, valguslaenguid may result from conditions like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or previous knee injuries that cause joint degeneration. It can also be a congenital trait or a consequence of metabolic bone diseases. Mild cases often do not require treatment, but severe or progressive valguslaenguid may necessitate medical intervention, such as physical therapy, bracing, or in rare cases, surgical correction.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, where a healthcare professional assesses the alignment of the legs and knees. X-rays may be used to evaluate bone structure and rule out underlying conditions. Treatment depends on the cause and severity, with early childhood cases usually resolving spontaneously. For persistent or symptomatic cases, interventions aim to correct alignment and improve mobility.
